The History of Designer Jeans
Designer jeans are denim pants that are specifically marketed to those that are fashion conscious and are concerned with wearing clothing as a status symbol. The trend for wearing designer jeans is believed to have started in 1978 when the Jordache line of jeans was launched. Since then, the desire to wear designer jeans has remained strong among those that are concerned about looking as good as possible.
In general, designer jeans are easily recognizable because of their tight fit. In addition, designer jeans typically display a very prominent label or logo to help set them apart from other jeans. This label or logo is usually found on the coin pocket in the right front portion of the jeans as well as on the back pockets.
Since Jordache’s success, a number of other designer jean labels have been launched. Some of these jeans include Sassoon, Sergio Valente, Chic, Bonjour, Gloria Vanderbilt, Calvin Klein, and Guess. Many of these designs have also launched racy and suggestive advertisements, including Brooke Shields’s tagline of “Know what come between me and my Calvins? Nothing.”
Most designer jean labels first market their products toward women. As the woman’s line of designer jeans gains popularity, the designer often follows it up with a men’s line. The women’s and men’s lines typically look very similar in overall appearance.
The shift in the trend toward men wearing baggie pants, however, has lead to many lines offering very different designer jeans for men and for women. This also appears to have been part of the reason for the drop in popularity of designer jeans in the 90s. Today, they have been regaining popularity and some of the brands that were popular in the 80s are regaining the popularity they once enjoyed..
