When shopping for evening dresses, there are seven different styles you can select from. These include:

  • A-Line
  • Ball Gown
  • Basque Waist
  • Cheongsam
  • Empire
  • Hankie Hem
  • Halter

Each of these styles of evening dresses is better suite for certain body types. Therefore, in order to look your best, you should select the style that is best suited to your particular body.

A-Line evening dresses are narrower at the top and flare out at the bottom. As a result, it looks like the letter “A” and is flattering to all figures. It is, however, a particularly good choice for women that are bottom-heavy.

The ball gown style is long and has a full skirt with a fitted bodice. This formal style looks best on tall women or women of average height. The style is also good for hiding full legs, full hips, and tummy pooches.

Basque waist evening dresses, which are also referred to as a V waist, makes the body look longer. As such, all body types look great in this style. The cheongsam style, on the other hand, looks best on women with athletic or slim figures because of its fitted design. This dress style is traditionally worn by women in China and is characterized by a high collar and its mid-calf cut.

Empire style evening dresses feature raised waistlines and look most attractive on petite women and on women that are slender on top. These dresses help disguise heavy bottoms and thick waists.

Hankie hem evening dresses look like a scarf and are usually below the knee or ankle-length. This style looks great on most body types. The halter dress, which is made from two pieces of material that meet behind the neck, is also great looking on all body styles. The dress does expose the arms, however, so the woman must be certain to have attractive arms when wearing the dress.
