Evening Dresses: An OverviewEvening dresses can come in a variety of lengths and styles, though the length and style selected for a particular event needs to be determined by the event itself. For example, in the case of formal occasions such as white tie events, evening dresses should be full and long. With less formal occasions, such as black tie events, you can have a bit more flexibility with the style and the length of the evening dresses you select. Evening dresses, also referred to as evening gowns when worn at black tie events, are still long and are usually flowing and loose. The length of dresses worn for these events may range from tea-length or ballerina-length to full-length. The style of evening dresses worn to these events depends largely on the personal taste of the woman that is to be wearing the dress. In general, however, evening dresses are made from luxurious fabrics such as silk, satin, chiffon, or velvet. The type of fabric used to make the evening dresses will have an impact on the overall look and feel of the dress, though each choice is equally as beautiful. If the woman will be accompanying a man that is wearing a formal kilt, the rules for evening dresses are a bit different. In this situation, the woman should wear a white gown along with a tartan sash. If the woman is entitled to wear the tartan of her own clan, she may choose to wear this pattern. She may also choose to wear the tartan of her husband’s clan or may choose one of the “district tartans,” which are those that have been approved for general use. If the occasion is less formal, the woman can wear a longer kilted skirt along with a jacket rather than the white gown and sash.
